REVIEW: FATHERHOOD IS AMAZING.
This movie surprised me. Usually when I see Kevin Hart I think loud and tries too hard to be funny, but this movie got me Misty eyed.
Kevin brought his A game to this and his performance here made me respect him even more as an actor.
Fatherhood is based on "Two kisses for Maddy: A memoir of loss and love." By Matthew Logelin which follows Matthew Logelin (played by Kevin Hart) who lost his wife Liz(played by Deborah Ayorinde) to a pulmonary embolism after she gave birth to their child Maddy. Matt soon has to deal with the highs and lows of single parenting while also grieving his late wife.
If that sounds super depressing that's because it is, which is a huge departure from what I associate Kevin Hart with, which is usually yelling, short jokes, yelling about short jokes and repeating something someone just said in his sped up Kevin Hart voice.
Kevin's performance in this movie was amazing and I mean he nailed the funny stuff as well as the heart warming stuff which again I never expected at all.
That's not to say the rest of the cast didn't do their part too, I feel they all played their parts perfectly. Like Melody Hurd who plays Maddy the daughter to Matt. This little girl delivered her lines really well and I dug her performance.
There's not much to say about everyone's acting, the whole caste has been around for a while and we've seen them in other stuff so I reckon we talk characters innit? (That was me trying to be British...did it work?)
The supporting cast does an excellent job of fleshing out the main character and providing a small lense to what his life was like pre his wife's death and post his wife's death.
Every character in this movie plays a role in Matt's healing process after losing Liz.
His best friends were Jordan played by Lil Rey Howery and Oscar played by Anthony Carrigan (which by the way is the first time I've ever seen Anthony Carrigan in a normal role and not playing a supervillain on a DC show...I'm serious... homie played Victor Zsas on Gotham it's insane). Anyway his best friends served as both comic relief and moral support, supporting him through losing his wife, raising his daughter and eventually dating again.
Matt's mother in law Marian played by Alfre Woodard served as a parental support for him as he raised Maddy, she was also his biggest opp and supporter like how are you for the homie and against him at the same time? But I get it, she seemed like kind of a control freak but her heart was in the right place.
There were other characters like Liz's father who served as bit of a father figure to Matt but he didn't get enough screen time to be really fleshed out. The same can be said about Matt's mom.
Characters aside the movie's score was probably the thing I liked the most. It was composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams who I think did a wonderful job. The soft piano keys during the emotional moments really help sell the mood of the scenes they're used in.
In my opinion the movie does suffer from being a little boring but such is the case with fact based media.
In conclusion Fatherhood is a great movie everyone can have a chill time watching.
Solid 7/10.
My favorite review so far. Well researched and properly detailed... I'd give this movie a solid 8.5 though and that's the only point we differ at, but otherwise, great review.
